Here are the updated betting odds to win the 2021 NL Cy Young award. It’s mid-September and the awards race is heating up.
Updated Betting Odds to Win 2021 NL Cy Young Award
This MLB Season has seen some of the best pitching of all time and now the 2021 NL Cy Young race is ON! Early in the season, it was reminiscent of 1968 when Bob Gibson finished with an MLB record ERA of 1.12. He only allowed 11 runs in 304 innings pitched. MLB lowered the mound before the 1969 season.
Mets’ ace Jacob deGrom looked like he might contest Gibson’s 1968 record to start the season. deGrom may have won the 2021 NL Cy Young and the NL MVP had he stayed healthy all season. He currently has +8000 odds to win the NL Cy Young, the 8th best odds in the NL.
The 2021 season will be known as the season of the no-hitters. While they have slowed down as the year progressed, it looked like every pitcher in MLB would throw one early in the season. There have been 13 thrown so far this year, including combined no-nos and seven-inning no-hitters.
Unlike the MLB, we aren’t going to move the goalposts on no-hitters. The pitchers didn’t decide to only pitch seven innings; MLB forced them to due to a rule change. The MLB punished them by not calling the seven inning no-hitters “official no-hitters.” Yet another reason for everyone to love Rob Manfred.
At least one Cy Young candidate has thrown a no-no this year. Carlos Rodon threw one in mid-April, and now has +1000 odds to win the AL Cy Young. None of the NL candidates have thrown one in 2021.
Let’s look at the betting odds to win the NL Cy Young award heading into the 3rd week of September. According to BetUS, Walker Buehler has the best odds to win it at -110.
NL Cy Young | Odds |
Walker Buehler | -110 |
Max Scherzer | +200 |
Corbin Burnes | +200 |
Zack Wheeler | +500 |
Brandon Woodruff | +600 |
Kevin Gausman | +2000 |
Freddy Peralta | +6600 |
Jacob deGrom | +8000 |
#1 Odds to Win 2021 NL Cy Young | Walker Buehler (-110)
Coming in with even odds to win the 2021 NL Cy Young award, Walker Buehler of the Los Angeles Dodgers. Los Angeles and Milwaukee each have three starting pitchers with top ten odds to win the award. This explains why they have the second and third-best records in the National League.
Heading into Buehler’s last start on September 5th, he had quality starts in 10 straight appearances and 19 of his previous 20. He’s only allowed more than 4 earned runs twice this season, once in April and his most recent appearance.
Buehler is 13-3 with a 2.31 ERA and has produced 5.6 bWAR this season. He finished 9th in Cy Young voting in 2019 with a 3.26 ERA in 30 starts. He has eclipsed his stats from the 2019 season here in 2021.
#2 Odds to Win 2021 NL Cy Young | Max Scherzer and Corbin Burnes (+200)
Coming in with the second-highest odds to win the NL Cy Young are Max Scherzer and Corbin Burnes, tied with +200 odds to the 2021 NL Cy Young award at BetUS Sportsbook. One could almost nominate the entire Brewers and Dodgers pitching staff for the award this year. They have been dominant.
Since being traded to the Dodgers, Mad Max has a 1.05 ERA in 7 starts. He is 13-4 with a 2.28 ERA on the season. After being traded to a new team, he’s the first pitcher in MLB history to win his first five starts. He’s 5-0 with LA and has only allowed 5 earned runs.
Corbin Burnes burst onto the scene in 2018, starting his career at 7-0 in 38 innings pitched with a 2.61 ERA. Burnes only started four games in 2019, and fell off a cliff with an ERA over 8. He then exploded back onto the scene in 2020 with a 2.11 ERA in 9 games started.
Burnes has a 9-4 record and 2.38 ERA in 144 innings pitched this season. Teammates Brandon Woodruff and Freddy Peralta are also in the top 10 to win the Cy Young this season.
Dark Horse | deGOAT | Jacob deGrom (+8000)
That’s right. We have to mention Jacob deGOAT as our longshot candidate. If deGrom hadn’t gotten hurt this season, he likely would have won the Cy Young and possibly the MVP. deGrom was 7-2 with 1.08 ERA in 92 innings pitched when he went down. He somehow already produced 5.0 bWAR in 15 starts.
His betting odds to win the 2021 NL Cy Young are at +8000 here in mid-September. That being said, no one could fault voters for giving deGrom the award with his INSANE numbers this season, especially if he returns this month and continues to dominate.
