Bridgewater Named Broncos Starting QB
Teddy Bridgewater has beat out Drew Lock for the starting quarterback job come NFL Week 1, as Broncos head coach Vin Fangio named him #1 on the depth chart earlier this week.
In his first season with Denver, Bridgewater impressed out of the gate in his first two preseason starts. The 28-year-old has played in 40 snaps so far and has completed over 80% of his passes with no turnovers. Drew Lock hasn’t been too bad himself, throwing two passing touchdowns on 66.7% passing.
Both Bridgewater and Lock will see the field in the Broncos preseason finale, so expect them to continue their competition. Even though Bridgewater is set to start the regular season as the starter, this quarterback battle is far from over. These guys are going to make each other even better going forward, and this is healthy competition for a Denver team that has had a massive hole at QB ever since Peyton Manning retired.
Tight end Noah Fant isn’t expected to play on Saturday as he missed practice on both Tuesday and Wednesday. Corner Mike Ojemudia, running back Mike Boone, and safeties Caden Sterns and Trey Marshall have also been ruled out.
Stafford Won’t Make Rams Debut Until Week 1
Rams fans will have to wait until NFL Week 1 of the regular season to see their new quarterback, as Matt Stafford won’t see the field until the first Sunday Night Football of the year against the Bears.
Sean McVay went on the Doug Gottlieb show earlier this month and made it clear he has no plans on starting his new quarterback in any preseason game:
“There is zero chance you will ever see Matthew Stafford take a snap in the preseason as long as I’m the coach. That will never happen… Until you tell me that if a guy gets hurt in the preseason that we’ll get those games back, or they’ll add them on the schedule afterward… it’s hard for me to make sense of it.”
Expect backups John Wolford and Bryce Perkins to each get a half at the helm for the Rams on Saturday. Additionally, the Rams beefed-up running back corps on Wednesday, trading for Sony Michel. The ex-Georgia Bulldog was a member of the Patriots for three seasons and won two Super Bowls in the process.
Starting running back Darrell Henderson is questionable for Saturday with a thumb injury, so it’ll be interesting to see if Michel suits up and gets some touches to get acclimated in McVay’s offense.
The Pick
Bridgewater and Lock are a clear betting edge over Wolford and Perkins, so I have no problem laying the money with Denver on the spread as heavy favorites. Sean McVay could care less about preseason results, and the Rams are a perfect team to fade in a preseason affair.
