Tumultuous Offseason For Rodgers and Green Bay
It seems like just yesterday that we didn’t know if Aaron Rodgers was even going to be the Packers starting quarterback come NFL Week 1. Rodgers and the Packers front office were basically feuding all offseason long, and it ended with Rodgers voicing his frustrations in a press conference a month ago. Rodgers didn’t hesitate about letting the media know about his problems with management and his lack of say with the offense.
That said, Rodgers and the Packers seem on better terms, at least for now, and the three-time MVP will lead the defending NFC North champs into the 2021-2022 campaign with no short of expectation.
Rodgers hasn’t played in any of the first two preseason games thus far but should see a full half of action before Jordan Love or Kurt Benkert takes over. Rodgers will be reunited with slot receiver Randall Cobb for the first time since 2018, so it will be interesting to see if they pick up where they left off.
WR Devin Funchess has landed on the IR with a lower-body injury so that greatly affects his chances of making the team. Key starters for the Packers that are listed as questionable for Saturday’s game include linebacker Za’Darius Smith and corner Jaire Alexander.
Buffalo The Clear Favourite In The AFC East
Move over New England, and Buffalo is now the team that will be favored to win the AFC East for the next few years. Led by Josh Allen, the Bills are an offensive juggernaut that possess an opportunistic defense and an always ruckus home-field advantage. Allen will make his preseason debut on Saturday, coming off throwing for career highs in passing yards and touchdowns in 2020. Allen was named Second-team All-Pro last season as well, boasting a quarterback rating of 107.2,
The Bills blew out the Bears 41-15 last week, as backup Mitch Trubiusky completed 20/28 passes for 221 yards and 1 touchdown. With Davis Webb and Jake Fromm also on the roster, this is probably the deepest team in the NFL at the quarterback position.
Receivers Cole Beasley, Gabriel Davis, and defensive tackles Star Lotulelei and Vernon Butler are currently in the NFL’s five-day reentry quarantine after being reportedly close to contact with a trainer who tested positive for COVID-19.
The Pick
Depth at QB is probably the biggest edge in preseason football, as that’s the position that’s really highlighted and isolated in terms of handicapping these games. I expect Rodgers and Allen to basically cancel each other out in the first half, but Trubisky is probably one of the best backups in the NFL now and will be the difference-maker in the second half as the Bills pull away at home.
