San Diego State Aztecs vs Utah Utes Betting Preview
Utah squares up against a Mountain West Conference team for the second straight week but is hoping this week will be the end in disappointment after last week’s loss to the BYU Cougars. On the flip side, San Diego State matches up against a Pac-12 team for a second straight week and hopes to carry the momentum of a road win over Arizona into Week 3. College football fans often miss out on some great late night games on the west coast, and this matchup between former Mountain West rivals sets up to be one of those games.
Utah has won 10 of the last 12 games in this series dating back to 1999, but the two teams haven’t matched up since 2010. The Utes are 0-2 against the spread through the first two weeks, while the Aztecs are 1-1.

San Diego State Aztecs Team Preview
Brady Hoke is back in Southern California coaching the Aztecs for the second time after an unfortunate stint as the head coach at Michigan. Hoke is known for being a quality defensive coach and this year’s Aztecs team seems to fall right in line with that standard.
Offensively the Aztecs haven’t had to do much in their two wins to open the season as quarterback Jordon Brookshire has thrown for less than 150 yards per game. Week 1 was a slow start for San Diego State as they only scored 28 points as a 31.5-point favorite against New Mexico, but the Aztecs thumped Arizona in Week 2 by 24 points as an underdog.
As mentioned, the strength of this squad is on the defensive side of the ball as the team has racked up nine sacks and four interceptions in the first two games.
Utah Utes Team Preview
Many people picked Kyle Whittingham’s team to be the surprise team in the Pac-12 this season, but if not for Washington they’d be considered the most disappointing team to start the year. The Utes trailed FCS Weber State before a delay in the game paused the action and they ultimately pulled away with a win, but Week 2 saw a nine-game winning streak against rival BYU snapped in a game the Utes never led.
Charlie Brewer transferred in from Baylor to play quarterback and has thrown an interception in each of his first two games. The Utes hope the super senior can improve his ball security as the season goes along and can pair some quality quarterback play with emerging running back Micah Bernard.
Utah has been known to be tough on the defensive side of the ball, but so far this year the team has not done much to inspire faith. The team ranks near the bottom of the conference in sacks per game and turnover margin and needs to be more disruptive to find success in conference play.
Betting Preview
BetOnline, BetUS, and Bovada have the Utes as 8.5 point favorites and the over/under betting total set at 44 points. The oddsmakers clearly see this as a low-scoring game.
Expect San Diego State to lean on their defense to force Charlie Brewer into some turnovers. If Brewer can take care of the ball and lean on the running game the Utes could find some success. On the other side of the coin, a struggling Aztec offense could be what the doctor ordered to help Utah find its way on defense.
Utah needs to rebound from a tough loss to BYU and right the ship heading into Pac-12 play. Expect the Utes to cover the spread against San Diego State and give the Aztec offense enough problems to keep the under/total points bet in play.
