NCAA Football Week 4 Recap

The college football season is starting to take shape, with the true contenders stepping forward and the pretenders getting exposed, whether because of injuries or the inability to fill crucial holes left by talented departures.

The landscape continues to change, but Alabama is still ranked number one with their fellow SEC team Georgia right behind them in the rankings, with Pac-12 Oregon sitting in third as they head into the teeth of their conference schedule.

Upsets to College Football Playoff Contenders

(16) Arkansas Razorbacks (4-0, 1-0) 20  (7) Texas A&M Aggies (3-1, 0-1 10 : The Aggies came into the season with a dominating defense and the prospects of knocking off Alabama in the SEC West, but for the first time since they joined the conference, Arkansas went into Arlington, Texas as 4.5 point underdogs and came away with a victory against Texas A&M.

The Razorbacks jumped up to number eight in the polls and took on number two Georgia on Saturday.

N.C. State Wolfpack (3-1, 1-0) 27  (9) Clemson Tigers(2-2, 1-1) 21: It took two overtime periods, but for the first time since the College Football Playoff (CFP) began, it’s now unlikely for the ACC to be represented following the Wolfpack’s upset of Clemson, whose inability to move the ball finally caught up with them. Clemson just had too many holes to fill on offense and N.C. The state now emerges as a favorite to win a conference title.

Baylor Bears 31 (4-0, 2-0) 31  (14) Iowa State Cyclones (2-2, 0-1) 29: Iowa State was looking to build on their 2020 regular season Big 12 crown, but they couldn’t hold off an inspired Baylor team that came in as 7.5 point underdogs at home, but now have their eyes on a run to a conference championship.

Close Calls

(4) Oklahoma Sooners (4-0, 0-1) 16  West Virginia Mountaineers (2-2, 0-1) 13: The Mountaineers showed their win over 15th ranked Virginia Tech was no fluke as they took a 13-10 lead into the fourth quarter on the road at Norman. The Sooners haven’t looked dominant in 2021, and the Big 12 is probably still wide open.

(15) BYU Cougars (4-0) 35   South Florida Bulls (1-3) 27: BYU entered the game as 23.5 point favorites against one of the worst defensive teams in the country, but they were able to withstand a Bulls’ rally after jumping out to a 28-6 halftime lead.

(22) Fresno State Bulldogs (4-1, 1-0) 38   UNLV Rebels (0-4, 0-1) 30: UNLV as 30 point underdogs jumped out to a 14 point lead and battled the Bulldogs to the end, but the Rebels went four and out after Fresno State kicked a field goal for the final margin of victory with two and half minutes left in the game.

Business as Usual

(1)Alabama Crimson Tide (4-0) 63  Southern Mississippi Golden Eagles (1-3) 14: The top-ranked Tide was favored by 45 points over Southern Miss and managed to cover the massive spread with a late touchdown pass from third-string quarterback Jalen Milroe.

Alabama stayed focused for a game that was sandwiched between top 15 SEC rivals Florida and Ole Miss.

(2) Georgia Bulldogs (4-0, 2-0) 62  Vanderbilt Commodores (1-3, 0-1) 0: Georgia continued their dominating defensive efforts, holding Vanderbilt to 77 total yards and convincingly surpassing the 35 point spread. The country’s top defensive unit will try to shut down the balanced offensive attack of Arkansas in a clash of undefeated top ten ranked teams.

(3) Oregon Ducks (4-0, 1-0) 41  Arizona Wildcats (0-4, 0-1) 19: Oregon ran Arizona’s losing streak to 16 games, but they needed a 17 – 0 fourth quarter to subdue the Wildcats after a 24-10 halftime lead had shrunk to 24-19 after three stanzas.
