Don’t Let The Seahawks Ugly Preseason Results Deceive You
Despite going winles in the preseason, Seattle stars such as Russell Wilson, D.K. Metcalf, and Tyler Lockett have yet to suit up in an exibition game. It’s likely that head coach Pete Carroll will let his stars see some playing time in this one.
Wilson is coming off another exceptional season, and it will be interesting to see if he’s able to connect with new tight end Gerald Everett in this game.
Seattle opens their regular season with a big game on the road in Indianapolis. The Seahawks finished the 2020 season with a 12-4 record and started out the year winning their first five games.
Seattle will need another hot start to the 2021 season in the highly-contested AFC West, as it’s almost anyone’s for the taking. Momentum starts with this game, as any rust that Russell Wilson and company have will need to be ironed out by the end of Saturday night.
Who Will Backup Justin Herbert In Los Angeles?
Last year’s rookie of the year Justin Herbert won’t start at quarterback in this one, as it’l be a battle of the backups to decide who gets the number two job behind Herbert. Brandon Staley will run out veteran Chase Daniel and 2019 fifth-round pick Easton Stick.
Daniel was outshined by his counterpart in the last preseason game, as he threw an interception and Stick completed 10/14 passes for 85 yards and a touchdown. Daniel has been in the NFL since 2009 however, and has started in five regular season games.
If he’s able to put in a quality performance against the Seahawks, the 34-year-old should have the upper hand at being the full-time backup.
All-Pro safety Derwin James will not suit up in this contest for Los Angeles. James is coming off missing the entire 2020 season due to a torn meniscus. The Chargers are expected to be much better in 2021 after blowing multiple leads last year and finishing the season 7-9.
The Pick
Considering we’ll probably see Seattle’s big-time starters take the field in this one and Herbert won’t play, this is an easy play on Saturday night. Seattle remains one of the hardest stadiums to play in as a road team, and even in the preseason, you can bet the 12th man will make life hard for the Chargers.
I’m comfortable taking the Hawks covering the point spread as they should be well ahead by halftime, with backup QB Geno Smith taking mop-up duties come the second half.
