As the regular season winds down, we start to look to the MLB Postseason and awards season. The odds to win 2021 AL Cy Young are heating up. We have a lot of close races for Silver Slugger in both the AL and NL. The National League MVP race is one to keep an eye on while the American League MVP might as well already be in Shohei Ohtani’s living room.
The 2021 MLB Season looks like it’s going to go out with a bang in many different ways here in mid-September. Pennant races in the NL are getting red-hot and both Wild Card races are getting tight as well.

#1 Odds to Win 2021 AL Cy Young | Gerrit Cole (-145)
After an odd press conference on June 8th that Gerrit Cole all but admitted to using spider tack, or at least some foreign substance to enhance his grip, everyone expected Cole’s spin rate and efficiency to plummet. Since then Cole is 8-4 with a 3.25 ERA. If spider tack was helping him, it wasn’t by much.
Cole is 14-7 with a 2.78 ERA over 158.1 innings pitched this season. Another career year for the 31-year old veteran. He has a 5.5 WAR and has struck out 217 while only walking 34 and giving up 19 home runs. Cole’s 0.989 WHIP and 2.64 FIP lead the American League.
His 5.5 bWAR for Pitchers ranks 5th in MLB and 2nd in the AL. His MLB ranks are 3rd in wins, 7th in ERA, 5th in WHIP, 9th in hits per nine, 8th in walks per nine, 1st in strikeouts per nine, and 2nd in total strikeouts. Insert big eyes emoji here.
#2 Odds to Win 2021 AL Cy Young | Robbie Ray (+115)
Robbie Ray is the only pitcher in the American League with a higher bWAR for Pitchers than Gerrit Cole. His 6.6 leads both the American League and all of the Majors. His 2.69 ERA to go with it ranks 6th in MLB.
Before the 2021 season, Ray was primarily known only for his ability to strike a lot of guys out, give up a few too many free passes, and always having a high pitch count. In 2017 when Ray was still in Arizona, he went 15-5 and put up a 2.89 ERA with 218 strikeouts. He finished 7th in NL Cy Young voting.
In 2019, he put up career highs in strikeouts with 235, games started with 34, and innings pitched with 171.4. Unfortunately for Ray, he also posted a career-high 84 walks and his ERA was 4.34.
In his first season with the Blue Jays, Ray has been nothing short of phenomenal. His 28 games started, 6.6 WAR for Pitchers, 2.69 ERA, 170.1 innings, 220 Ks, 165 ERA+, and 7 hits per nine all lead the American League. His 220 strikeouts lead all of MLB.
Dark Horses | White Sox Starters | Lance Lynn (+235) and Carlos Rodon (+1000)
We really like Gerrit Cole at -145 and we like Robbie Ray at +115 even more, however, there are a few other guys with longshot odds to win it. Two of these dark horse candidates play for the White Sox.
Lance Lynn has the better odds of the two and isn’t really a dark horse. At +235, Lynn has a legit chance to win the AL Cy Young. Lynn is 10-4 with a 2.58 ERA and has accrued 4.5 WAR for Pitchers on the season. Lynn has finished top 6 in AL Cy Young voting both of the past two seasons.
Carlos Rodon is a legit longshot to win this award. According to BetUS, his odds to win are at +1000. Rodon is 12-4 with a 2.38 ERA, 4.4 WAR, and 175 strikeouts. Rodon also took part in the MLB’s no-hitter extravaganza earlier in the season.
He threw a no-no on April 14th against the Indians. Rodon had 7 strikeouts, 0 walks, and lost the perfect game in the ninth with a hit batter. On paper, Rodon has as good a shot as any candidate to take the award home.
