The Padres played grade-A baseball in New York over the weekend. They clubbed four home runs off of Max Scherzer in Game 1 to defeat the Mets.
After losing in Game 2 to the Jacob deGrom-led Mets, San Diego bounced back with a dominant Game 3 performance to clinch the series win. Joe Musgrove led the charge with seven dominant innings of 1-hit baseball.
Still, the Padres have found almost no success against the Dodgers. They finished over 20 games behind them in the NL West, and will be predicted to lose by almost everyone. This seems like the classic and undeniable case of a true underdog.
Still, the Padres have one advantage that could propel them to a series win: the Dodgers will have rested almost a week by the time Tuesday’s game rolls around, but the Padres will still be in rhythm after taking only one day off.
In the end, however, San Diego’s odds of winning will still be slim for many a good reason, but with Juan Soto and Manny Machado anchoring the middle of the lineup and giving them an edge, anything is possible.
The official starting pitchers have not been announced as of this story’s publication. However, Mike Clevinger is the expected starter for the Padres. Los Angeles Dodgers Preview
The Dodgers finished the regular season as MLB’s best team. They did almost everything at an elite rate and stood head-and-shoulders above most of their competition. Additionally, they got the job done against the Padres throughout the year. The Dodgers are fresh off of a 111-win regular season, but LA has endured plenty of struggles during the playoffs over the past few years, despite their immense regular season success.
Anything less than a World Series championship will be considered a gargantuan failure in 2022.
As for season stats, LA is fourth in team batting average, first in OBP, second in slugging percentage, first in runs scored, and fifth in home runs. Pitching-wise, they are first in ERA, first in WHIP, and first in batting average against.
Mookie Betts, Freddie Freeman, and Trea Turner all have MVP cases. Although none of them will likely be winning the award, they all enjoyed spectacular 2022 campaigns. Any lineup that features three true-blue stars, with other good hitters around, is definitely going to be successful.
But it’s the Dodgers’ pitching which really stands out. Despite losing Walker Buehler for the year, with both Clayton Kershaw and Tony Gonsolin dealing with injuries, the Dodgers still pitched incredibly.
Julio Urias was a major reason for that. The left-hander has a legitimate Cy Young argument after leading the NL in ERA.
Either Urias or Kershaw is expected to start Game 1 for the Dodgers in LA against the Padres.
Injury Report
The Padres are mostly healthy heading into this game. They obviously miss Fernando Tatis Jr, who’s suspended for PEDs, but their roster is otherwise mostly intact.
Pitchers Dustin May, Phil Bickford, and Michael Grove are all on the 15-day IL.
May, who is facing a back ailment, recently pitched in a simulated game and is reportedly “taking positive steps” towards an NLCS return. LA would implement him as a bullpen option, if May is able to return.
Michael Grove is on the IL with a left knee contusion. His timetable is unclear. Even if he was eligible to return, there is no guarantee that the Dodgers would place him on the playoff roster.
There are also no updates on Bickford’s injury.
The Dodgers are still one of the deepest teams in the sport despite their many injured players.
