Yankees Bounce Back
The Yankees have been impressive as of late. 13 games in a row is a solid example of being impressive, but this lineup has all the weapons to get going and be tough to stop. Their pitching has always been the real question mark for this team.
With the addition of James Taillon and Luis Gil coming up from the minors and pitching well, it seems they have figure out their best rotation.
Leading the way offensively has been their all-star outfielder Aaron Judge. Hitting just below the .300 mark, his power numbers have steadily increased, and has added 29 homeruns to the ball club’s production. The Yankees have seven other players who are hitting over .250 and have brought their team batting average up to .238.
Athletics Can’t Give Up Yet
The Athletics are a scrappy group of ballplayers that found success in 2020 and are trying to repeat that performance in 2021. Unfortunately, so far the season has not gone the way they had hoped. They are in a dogfight to try to make the wildcard spot currently, and the way Houston is playing, it will be tough to catch them in the division.
The biggest addition to this team from last year has been Starling Marte. Acquired at the trade deadline, Marte has continued his great play in Oakland. He has hits in eight of his last ten games, with four of them being multi hit games. If the rest of the team can match Marte’s effort, they may be able to chase down the Red Sox.
Pitching Matchups
The Yankees will send Jordan Montgomery to the mound this evening. He has started 23 games this season and has a 5-5 record with a 3.69 ERA. He is averaging right around six innings per starts and is striking out a batter an inning.
Paul Blackburn will be on the bump for the Athletics. Making his third start of the season for the Athletics, Blackburn has been solid so far. He has gone at least five innings in each of his two previous starts. In his last start he was able to strike out five batters and not walk anyone.
Yankees Win
With the way this lineup is hitting, getting to go up against a young pitcher like Blackburn could make for a long day for Oakland. Montgomery has been solid and the team has won his last four starts.
