The first Sunday of the NFL season concludes with one of the NFL’s oldest rivalries when the New York Giants host the Dallas Cowboys on Sunday Night Football. The two teams take the field for the first time this season as they square off in an early NFC East showdown.
Since their first meeting in 1960, these two teams have played each other 122 over the last 62 seasons, with the Cowboys holding a 73-47-2 advantage all-time. Looking at the past NFL stats, Dallas has won the last four meetings against the Giants, including a pair of wins last season. The last time these two met was last Thanksgiving, with the Cowboys defeating New York, 28-20.
Dallas is expected to contend at the top of the division alongside last year’s NFC Champion Philadelphia Eagles. The Cowboys return Dak Prescott under center as well as a defensive unit that ranked in the top half of the league in 2022.
The outlook isn’t as great for the Giants, who come into 2022 searching for their second consecutive trip to the postseason. New York finished the regular season with a 9-7-1 record, their first winning season since 2016. This year, the Giants are projected to finish below .500 again.

Pollard looks to follow up his best season as a pro, where he rushed for 1,007 yards and nine touchdowns and added 371 yards and three scores through the air.
Leading the receiving core is Prescott’s favorite target, CeeDee Lamb. The electric wide receiver hauled in 107 receptions for 1,359 yards and nine touchdowns last year on 156 targets. Lamb will be joined by veteran wideout Brandin Cooks, who gives the Cowboys a deep-threat option on the outside.
The Cowboys’ defense is led by two-time Pro Bowl linebacker Micah Parson and returns the key pieces from last year’s unit that held opponents to 20.1 points and 330.2 yards of total offense per game.
New York Giants Preview

Looking at the NFL standings, Saquon Barkley bounced back last year after a depressing 2021 campaign. The bell-cow rusher carried the ball 295 times for 1,312 yards and ten touchdowns in 2022, amassing double-digit scores on the ground for the first time since his rookie year. Barkley will again be the focal point of the offensive scheme this year.
The biggest question mark for the Giants’ offense will be who steps up to lead the wide receiving core. Darius Slayton caught 46 passes for 724 yards and two touchdowns as the team’s leading pass-catcher last year but will need the support cast around him to take a step forward.
The Giants added tight end Darren Waller in the offseason, who could make an immediate impact in the passing game as long as he stays healthy.
When making your NFL picks, keep in mind that three of New York’s top four tacklers are gone from the 2022 unit, but the Giants bring back a lot of talent defensively, with Dexter Lawrence, Kayvon Thibodeaux, and Adoree’ Jackson leading each level on the defensive side of the ball.
