Although the Yankees have shown plenty of teams and fans this season, this series against the Tampa Bay Rays might be their biggest of the year. The reason why we say that is because of all the prior success that Tampa Bay has found against the Yankees and how big these games are for the American League East standings.
New York is going to be coming into this one already nine games in front of the third-place Tampa Bay Rays in the American League East, but everybody knows that the Rays are going to eventually get back on track and be one of the best teams in baseball. Tampa Bay hasn’t been bad by any means this year, but the Yankees have just been that much better.
On the season, the Yankees currently lead all of Major League Baseball in home runs, slugging, OPS, and also have the ninth-best batting average in the league. On the mound, the Yankees currently have the best team ERA in all of baseball at 2.85.

At 35-25, we would be looking at this as a great season for Tampa Bay if the Yankees weren’t playing as well as they currently are. It’s someone crazy to say that Tampa Bay is nine games behind them in the standings, but it is what it is for Tampa Bay and they just have to worry about the future.
We say that this is a huge series for the New York Yankees to prove a couple of people wrong, but it also might be an even bigger series for the Tampa Bay Rays. If Tampa Bay wants any chance of winning the division, they’re going to have to close in on this gap between them and the New York Yankees and there’s no better time to do that than beating them.
Tampa Bay hasn’t necessarily been great on the road this season and they haven’t been performing too well in their last 10. At 6-4 in their last 10 games, we can certainly look at that as a disappointment considering how much talent they do have on their roster. On the road this season, Tampa Bay is only 14-12. That is something that they’re going to have to fix if they’re going to want to be the team that everybody expects him to be. Winning in the playoffs is going to require them to have to win away from their home field, which might be an issue down the stretch.

If we’re going to put money on the New York Yankees in this one, we’re going to have to go with them to win by -1.5 runs. This does bring up some interesting thoughts just because Gerrit Cole hasn’t already been great in his past few outings. In his last outing against the Minnesota Twins, he ended up giving up seven earned runs in only 2.1 innings pitched.
The over/under in this one is going to see it set at 8. Considering that this game is going to be played in Yankee Stadium and the Yankees have one of the best lineups in all of baseball and the Rays offense isn’t any slouch, it could be a good time to throw some money on the over. However, we would suggest staying away from that just because if Gerrit Cole comes out and does what Gerrit Cole is supposed to do, the Tampa Bay Rays might not even put up a run.
The best bet of the night is going to be taking the New York Yankees -1.5. As we have previously noted, this could worry some. However, when looking at the type of work the New York Yankees have been able to put in throughout the year and in their past 10 games, it would be crazy to bet against them. They’re coming off a game where they just scored 18 runs and they’ve managed to score at least 10 runs in three out of their last six games. This Yankees offense has been clicking on all cylinders and if Gerrit Cole can just come out and give the Yankees a few strong innings, they should be able to come out with a win in this one.
It’s not going to be an easy task for the Yankees to win this game by -1.5 runs because the Tampa Bay Rays aren’t typically a team that lets games get out of control. However, with this one being in New York as well and the Rays being 14-12 away from their home field, let’s run with the safe pick here and take the Yankees -1.5.
