Odds, Picks and Predictions
The Seattle Mariners (55-48) and New York Yankees (69-34) will square off in an American League matchup on Monday.
The Mariners dropped three of four to the Astros in Houston over the weekend. Seattle is enjoying a successful 2022 campaign overall, but they are trailing Houston by quite a bit in the division. This series against the Yankees will be an important test for the Mariners.
Meanwhile, the Yankees took three of four from the Royals at home over the weekend. New York continues to roll and will aim for more of the same against Seattle this week.
This potential playoff matchup should lead to an exciting brand of baseball. Seattle would love nothing more than to upset the Yankees in New York. But that is easier said than done.
The first pitch is scheduled for 7:05 PM EST on Monday, August 1st, at Yankee Stadium in New York.

The Yankees enter as home favorites. They have been the favorites in the majority of their games this season. So this isn’t surprising by any means.
But the Mariners have extra motivation since they recently acquired Luis Castillo… who the Yankees also had an interest in. Castillo is slated to pitch Wednesday against Gerrit Cole in what projects to be a very enticing matchup.
As for Monday’s game, the Mariners want to jump out early. Falling behind against the Yankees in New York is never a sound strategy.
Expect both offenses to produce at a high level in Game One. Take the over on the set total of nine. I don’t expect either of these pitchers to shut down the competition.
But which team should you take in this game? Will the Mariners upset the odds, or can the Yankees cover the run line?
- The Seattle Mariners are 52-51 against the run line so far this season.
- The New York Yankees are 50-53 against the run line so far this year.
- The Mariners are 25-28 against the run line when playing on the road.
- The Yankees are 23-21 against the run line when playing at their home ballpark.
- Seattle is 37-24 against the run line as an underdog this year.
- New York is 44-51 against the run line as a favorite this year.
Betting on Seattle Mariners
The Mariners enter the game off of a difficult series in Houston. They lost three of four, and outfielder Julio Rodriguez suffered an injury (more on that below).
But this is a good team. They certainly could upset the odds.
This season, Seattle’s offense is ranked just 23rd in batting average and runs scored. However, they are 12th in OBP, 17th in slugging, and 14th in home runs. So this lineup features the ability to hit for power and get on base.
And they will need to do both of those things against New York on Monday.
Meanwhile, the Mariners have pitched the ball fairly well. They are seventh in team ERA and eighth in WHIP. They are also 12th in batting average against.
The one area where Seattle’s pitchers have struggled is limiting the long ball. The Mariners are 27th in terms of surrendering home runs. This is extremely concerning given New York’s home run prowess.
LHP Marco Gonzalez (6-10, 3.66) is the probable pitcher for the Mariners in this contest. The left-hander is susceptible to the long ball but does an overall good job of keeping hitters off-balance.
He will be tasked with trying to contain the Yankees’ powerful lineup. Good luck.
Betting on New York Yankees
The Yankees have been MLB’s best team in 2022. And the stats display why.
The lineup is just 14th in batting average. But they are first in runs scored, home runs, and slugging percentage, and second in OBP. The Yankees get runners on base and drive them in with extra base hits.
And that is a strategy that will always work.
But the pitching has been a big surprise this year. They are third in team ERA, second in WHIP, fifth in home runs allowed, and second in batting average against.
Gerrit Cole and Nestor Cortes have led the Yankees pitching rotation to their solid season. But it will be Domingo German (0-1, 8.22) getting the ball for Monday’s game.
German has labored in limited action this year. But he has an offense that will back him up. German will look to pitch well enough to keep New York in this game.
Giancarlo Stanton is currently on the injured list, which obviously impacts this game. But the Yankees lineup is more than deep enough to pick up the slack. Plus, Aaron Judge is on an incredible hot streak right now.
Look for New York to keep swinging the bats well in this ball game.
Seattle Mariners at New York Yankees Picks and Predictions
In the end, I expect this to be a high-scoring affair. Neither Gonzalez nor German will last all that deep into this game. So whichever bullpen out-pitches the other will end up deciding the winner.
Don’t be surprised if the Mariners lead the Yankees for a good portion of the game. But New York seems to always find a way to win. Look for the Yankees to earn a late victory on Monday.
But as discussed earlier, this game will include plenty of runs scored. So rolling with the over on the total is a smart bet as well. Paring the Yankees money line with the over should lead to a profitable day for bettors.
- Take the New York Yankees on the moneyline.
- Take the over (O/U 9) on the total.
- Roll with New York to cover the -1.5 run line.
