Odds, Picks and Predictions
The Philadelphia Phillies (62-49) and New York Mets (73-39) prepare to face off on Friday in Queens.
The Phillies have played very well as of late. Philadelphia had won seven consecutive games prior to their Thursday loss to the Marlins. They still sit in third place in the NL East, but the Phillies can make things interesting if they continue to play well.
However, catching the Mets will be extremely difficult.
The Mets are in the midst of a six-game winning streak. And three of those wins came against the Braves. So New York is undeniably a dangerous team at the moment.
And they can send a message to the Phillies with a strong performance in this series.
The first pitch is scheduled for 7:10 PM EST on Friday, August 12th, at Citi Field in New York.

Betting on Philadelphia Phillies
The Phillies have played a quality brand of baseball as of late. This is a team trending in the right direction. It goes without saying, but catching the Mets in the NL East obviously won’t be easy.
But it is clear that it is a three-team race between the Mets, Braves, and Phillies.
And if their current NL East deficit proves to be too much to handle, the Phillies can always use the Wild Card as a fallback option to make the playoffs.
One might argue that the Phillies’ chances of making any noise in the division will be determined by this series. If they can go into New York and pull off a sweep, they would have plenty of momentum.
However, that is going to be tough since they will be short-handed. Bryce Harper has been out for quite some time now with an injury, and Kyle Schwarber exited Thursday’s game early due to a calf strain.
So the Phillies are going to need all hands on deck if they want to defeat the red hot Mets.
Ranger Suarez (8-5, 3.68) is the scheduled starter for Philadelphia. Suarez is quietly enjoying a productive 2022 campaign. Most of the attention in the Phillies rotation goes to Aaron Nola and Zach Wheeler, but Suarez has been the X-Factor in the pitching staff.
And he could give Philadelphia an important boost with a solid outing on Friday.
Betting on New York Mets
Meanwhile, the Mets enter this game on a hot stretch. There were concerns about a potential second-half collapse. However, New York is quieting the doubters as they continue to win games.
They are proving that they belong in the best team in baseball conversation.
On the season, they are fourth in batting average, second in OBP, 10th in slugging percentage, third in runs scored, and 15th in home runs. Meanwhile, they are fifth in team ERA, fifth in WHIP, fourth in batting average against, and 18th in home runs allowed.
The Mets didn’t make many moves ahead of the MLB trade deadline. But they acquired some under-the-radar hitters like Tyler Naquin and Daniel Vogelbach, who have performed well since making the trip to NYC.
And their biggest addition was unquestionably Jacob deGrom, who returned from the injury list. The superstar has been lights out since rejoining the rotation.
His co-ace, Max Scherzer (8-2, 1.98), will start Friday’s game for New York. Scherzer has been excellent as well and should be able to handle Philadelphia’s short-handed lineup.
Look for “Mad Max” to be at the top of his game as the Mets aim to win Game 1 of this three-game set.
Philadelphia Phillies at New York Mets Picks and Predictions
The Phillies and Mets always make for good competition. These rivals match up well, and we should be in for a treat on Friday Night Baseball.
One would imagine that New York has a major advantage with Max Scherzer starting. However, Ranger Suarez has done a good job for the Phillies. So don’t be surprised if runs come at a premium, and this turns into a full-fledged pitcher’s duel.
So which team should you place your bets on? Can the Mets cover the run line at home?
I like New York’s chances because of the Max Scherzer-Edwin Diaz effect. New York had an off day yesterday, so Diaz is well-rested. If Scherzer can work deep into this game, Diaz will likely get a save opportunity.
And he’s been MLB’s best closer this season. Teams have been lucky to get hits off of him, let alone score any runs.
Again, I think this is a talented Phillies ball club. But they are not at full strength right now and are about to play one of MLB’s best teams.
So, in the end, I’d recommend rolling with New York in front of the home faithful. But we certainly can expect an exciting and competitive ball game between these NL East rivals.
The Picks:
- Go ahead and take the New York Mets-1.5 as your moneyline betting selection in this Friday night ball game.
- Take the under on the over/under run total, given the impressive pitching on both sides.
- Roll with the New York Mets -1.5 to cover the run line. Edwin Diaz will likely receive a save opportunity, but I expect it to come in a two or three-run game rather than a one-run affair.
