Odds, Predictions and Picks

  • The Tigers are 43-54 against the run line so far this season.
  • The Blue Jays are 46-53 against the run line so far this year.
  • The Blue Jays are 20-30 against the run line at their home field.
  • The Tigers are 24-23 against the run line when playing on the road.
  • The Blue Jays are 30-49 against the run line as a favorite.
  • The Tigers are 39-39 against the run line as an underdog.

The Detroit Tigers prepare to travel to Toronto to take on the Blue Jays for a four-game series.

Toronto enters this series playing extremely well as of late. They have been one of the hottest teams in MLB over the past couple of weeks.

Meanwhile, the Tigers continue to struggle overall. However, they are coming off of a 2-1 series win over the San Diego Padres. So perhaps they can carry some momentum into this series.

The first pitch is scheduled for 7:07 PM EST on Thursday, July 28th, at Rogers Centre in Toronto.

Blue Jays-210U/8.5-1.5

The Blue Jays enter play as heavy favorites. Toronto is playing an impressive brand of baseball as of late, and they appear to be hitting their stride. The Blue Jays should be able to cover and win this game.

With that being said, the Tigers will attempt to upset the odds. This is a Detroit team that has been decent when playing as an underdog this season. So upsetting the run line is not out of the question.

However, Toronto feels good about their chances.

Yusei Kikuchi (3-5, 5.12) will start for the Blue Jays. The left-hander has labored this season but will attempt to right the ship against Detroit.

Meanwhile, Tyler Alexander (2-3, 4.05) is the scheduled starter for the Tigers. Alexander has been fairly mediocre in 2022.

So which team should you place your money on? Is taking the favored Blue Jays the correct pick?

Detroit Tigers at Toronto Blue Jays Betting Preview

Detroit Tigers Preview

It’s no secret that Detroit has labored this season. The Tigers continue faltering and have been unable to turn things around. This is a ballclub that entered the 2022 campaign with high expectations… but things have not gone as planned.

Detroit is near the bottom of most categories. The Tigers rank 21st in ERA, 16th in WHIP, and 17th in batting average against. However, they are fifth in home runs surrendered.

But part of that is because hitting home runs at Comerica Park is no easy task.

Meanwhile, the offense has been nothing short of putrid. The Tigers rank 27th in batting average, 29th in OBP, 30th in slugging percentage, 30th in runs scored, and 30th in home runs.

Almost everyone in their lineup has labored. Riley Greene was a breath of fresh air upon his big league arrival, but that’s been about it for Detroit.

One thing to remember is that the Tigers may be playing with distractions. The MLB trade deadline is coming up, and a recent report from Ken Rosenthal stated that almost everybody on the team could be available.

These players are human beings, so even they are paying attention to the rumors. That is just something to keep in mind.

Toronto Blue Jays Preview

The Blue Jays feel good heading into this game, but they can’t afford to take Detroit for granted.

But their numbers suggest they should fare well on Thursday.

Toronto’s offense has stood out in a major way. They are first in batting average, second in OBP, second in slugging percentage, third in runs scored, and fifth in home runs.

The pitching hasn’t been quite as good, but it is still serviceable. Toronto ranks 16th in ERA, 10th in WHIP, 21st in batting average against, and 25th in home runs allowed.

Yusei Kikuchi has obviously struggled in 2022. But he should be able to pitch well against the porous Tigers offense.

And if he labors, the Blue Jays offense will pick up the slack.

Injury Report

Detroit has a number of injuries. Rony Garcia, Michael Pineda, Beau Brieske, and Wily Peralta are all on the 15-day IL.

Outfielder Austin Meadows is on the 10-day IL. His absence in the lineup really hurts the Tigers, given their lack of offensive depth.

Matt Manning, Casey Mize, and Spencer Turnbull are just a few of the names on the 60-day IL. Detroit entered the year with exciting young starting pitching. But with Mize and Manning both injured, their pitching depth was negatively affected in a major way.

For the Blue Jays, they are healthier than Detroit but still have various ailments of their own.

Kikuchi is scheduled to come off of the injured list after dealing with a neck strain.

Andrew Vasquez is also on the 15-day IL. Julian Merryweather and Hyun-jin Ryu are both on the 60-day IL. Nate Pearson is also on the 60-day.

But overall, the Blue Jays have remained fairly healthy in 2022. Health will be a major factor for them moving forward as they pursue the playoffs.

Detroit Tigers at Toronto Blue Jays Picks and Predictions

So who wins this game?

The Tigers and Blue Jays seems like a foregone conclusion. The Tigers should win. But this is baseball, and upsets happen all of the time.

With that in mind, I still like Toronto as the pick. The Blue Jays have too much depth for Detroit to compete with. And I like Kikuchi’s chances of rebounding in this ball game.

And Vladimir Gurrero Jr and Co. should have minimal issues with Detroit’s pitching staff. In the end, I like the Blue Jays.
The Pick:  Roll with the Toronto Blue Jays -1.5 in this Thursday night ball game.
