Odds and Picks

  • Detroit is 43-49 against the run line this season.
  • Oakland is 45-48 against the run line this year.
  • The A’s are a league-worst 13-29 against the run line at home.
  • The Tigers are 23-22 against the run on the road.
  • Detroit is 6-14 against the run line as a favorite.
  • Oakland is 43-40 against the run line as an underdog.

The Detroit Tigers (37-55) and Oakland Athletics (32-61) prepare to face off in a double-header on Thursday. Today, we will be breaking down Game One.

Both the Tigers and Athletics have struggled this year. But the Tigers have been a bit better and are the favorites despite being the road team.

However, the Athletics have actually played better as of late. And taking the home underdog can tend to be a good decision sometimes. So which team should you place your money on in this one?

The first pitch is scheduled for 3:37 PM EST at the Oakland Coliseum in Oakland, CA.

Detroit Tigers at Oakland Athletics Betting Preview

Detroit Tigers Preview

The Tigers entered the 2022 season with high expectations. They had signed a number of key players over the offseason and had a strong core of players coming to the big leagues. However, Detroit has faltered in a major way.

The Tigers currently sit in fourth place in the AL Central in what has been a disappointing 2022 campaign. They had dropped four consecutive games heading into Thursday’s contest.

The Tigers’ offense has been horrendous. They are 27th in batting average, 29th in OBP, 29th in slugging, 30th in runs scored, and 30th in home runs. To make matters worse, they recently sent former first round pick Spencer Torkelson to the minors after he labored throughout his rookie season.

The pitching has been better… but not great. The Tigers own the 22nd best ERA and 16th best team WHIP. Additionally, they are 19th in batting average against and seventh in home runs allowed.

But this is undeniably a team that needs to improve if they have any intentions of competing down the road.

Tarik Skubal (6-8, 4.11) is the scheduled starter for Detroit. Skubal features plenty of strikeout potential but has failed to find consistency so far in 2022. However, he could be a strong second half pitcher for the Tigers.

He will aim to lead Detroit to a victory on Thursday.

Oakland Athletics Preview

The Oakland Athletics are one of the worst teams in MLB. Despite that fact, the A’s have won three of their past five games. They most recently defeated the Astros 2-1 in a series.

So the A’s could upset the odds at home against Detroit.

Oakland comes into this series with even worse hitting numbers than the Tigers. They are 30th in batting average, OBP, and slugging. They are 29th in both runs scored and home runs. Most opposing pitchers have been able to walk all over the Athletics this year.

Meanwhile, Oakland is 23rd in ERA, 16th in WHP, 22nd in home runs allowed, and 20th in batting average against.

Zach Logue (3-4, 5.16) is the probable starter for Oakland. Logue has failed to find any kind of rhythm so far in the big leagues. But he will look to change that in this ball game.

The Athletics are going to be sellers at the trade deadline. But they still have players on the team looking to compete. So expect Oakland to come out firing on Thursday following the All-Star break.

Injury Report

Detroit has a number of injuries at the moment.

Wily Peralta is on the 15-day IL with a hamstring injury. Rony Garcia is also on the 15-day IL due to right shoulder soreness.

Outfielder Austin Meadows was placed on the 10-day IL in late June with an Achilles injury.

The Tigers have four different pitchers on the 60-day IL, including Casey Mize, Matt Manning, Spencer Turnbull, and Kyle Funkhouser.

The Athletics aren’t quite as beat up. However, they still have some notable injuries.

Jed Lowrie is on the 10-day IL with a sprained left shoulder. Jonah Bride is also on the 10-day IL with a dislocated shoulder.

Danny Jimenez and Daulton Jeffries are also both dealing with injury ailments.

Both of these ball clubs have a significant amount of injuries between the two of them. Since neither are in the playoff race, they will allow their injured players as much time as necessary to get fully healthy.

Detroit Tigers at Oakland Athletics Picks and Predictions

So, who wins this game?

Tigers enter play as the favorites. But the A’s have played better as of late.

In the end, I like the Tigers due to the fact that Tarik Skubal is on the mound. I personally believe Skubal has the talent to be one of the best pitchers in MLB. It wouldn’t be surprising to see him have a late-season surge following his mediocre first half.

And Skubal should have no issues dealing with this lackluster Athletics lineup.

As long as the Tigers post just enough runs, Detroit will uphold the spread and get the job done in Game One of this Thursday’s doubleheader.

Expect a low-scoring affair between these teams. The Tigers may be able to post three or four runs on the board. But Skubal and Detroit should be able to hold Oakland under two or three runs. Gregory Soto, an All-Star, will shut the door in the ninth for Detroit.

Prop bet: Take the over for Tarik Skubal on strikeouts. He is going to be mowing down Oakland hitters left and right in this ball game.

The Pick: Roll with the Detroit Tigers -1.5 in this Thursday MLB affair.
