The pitching has been the Sox’s main letdown. They rank 24th in team ERA, 23rd in WHIP, 22nd in batting average against, and 13th in home runs allowed.
Boston has been hit fairly hard with pitching injuries. But the guys who have stayed healthy haven’t found much of a rhythm either.
Rich Hill (7-7, 4.70) is the Red Sox scheduled pitcher in this game. Hill has been hit hard this year and hasn’t been able to contain opposing lineups. Hill has surrendered four or more runs in three of his previous four starts.
Rich Hill will aim to turn things around and limit the Yankees’ potent offense.
New York Yankees Preview
The Yankees won in extra innings on Thursday. Josh Donaldson and Giancarlo Stanton led the offense with three hits apiece. They combined to drive in three of the Yankees’ five runs as well.
Jameson Taillon pitched well on the mound. The right-hander went six innings and struck out eight batters while allowing no runs.
But reliever Clarke Schmidt promptly allowed four earned runs in the seventh. The Yankees bullpen was able to step up following Schmidt’s tough performance while the offense climbed back into the game.
New York would end up walking it off in the tenth and clinched a postseason berth in the process.
The Yankees are getting closer to clinching the division as they now hold a commanding 7.5-game lead. They are 8-2 over the course of their past ten games.
On the season, New York is 16th in batting average, second in runs scored, fifth in OBP, third in slugging percentage, and first in home runs. Their electric offense tends to play a major role in their success; however, the pitching cannot be overlooked.
The Yankees pitching staff ranks third in team ERA, third in WHIP, seventh in home runs allowed, and third in batting average against.
Gerrit Cole (12-7, 3.41) will get the start on Friday night. Cole hasn’t dominated this season like he has in previous years, but he’s still a valuable force on the hill. New York trusts him to lead them.
Injury Report
For the Red Sox, Garrett Whitlock will miss the season after enduring a hip injury. Trevor Story was recently placed on the 10-day IL with a heel injury.
For the Yankees, both Wandy Peralta and Frankie Montas were placed on the IL a week ago. But they are slowly getting healthy, with players such as Harrison Bader, DJ LeMahieu, Luis Severino, and Anthony Rizzo are either already back or on the verge of returning.
