Pachuca looks to be a team on a mission this season. The Gophers were the best team in Liga MX last season but couldn’t seal the deal at the end, losing to Atlas in the playoff finals. But they are surely out to make sure that doesn’t happen again, winning each of their first two matches in the new campaign.
Thus far, the Gophers have scored two wins. First, there was a 2-0 home win over Queretaro, followed by a 2-1 road win over Cadiz. While most of the league has already played three matches, Pachuca is one of only five teams left in Liga MX without a loss.
The Gophers have scored four goals by four different players during their first two matches of the season. Offseason additions Marino Hinestroza and Paulino de la Fuente haven’t gotten on the score sheet yet, although they add even more depth to Pachuca’s attack. Likewise, they have conceded just one goal in two matches.
Mazatlan FC Preview
After an underwhelming 12th place finish last season, Mazatlan is off to a rough start in the new season. They began with a 4-2 home loss against Puebla and followed it up with a 1-0 home loss to Tigres. Going on the road Monday against a strong Pachuca side isn’t exactly what the doctor ordered for the Gunners.
Needless to say, Mazatlan’s defense has been called into question early in the campaign after allowing five goals over two matches. Based on their personnel, that’s an area where the Gunners should be better. Of course, Puebla and Tigres are two of the better sides in Liga MX, so a tough schedule should be factored into that assessment.
On the bright side, the Gunners have managed to score two goals over their first two matches despite being shut out against Tigres. Mexican international Marco Fabian was retained during the offseason, giving Mazatlan one of the best playmakers in Liga MX. However, there are still questions about who will emerge as a reliable scorer.
