Blues Carry the Momentum South
After a somewhat disappointing 2020-2021 season, which saw the Blues lose in the first round to the Colorado Avalanche, getting the guys back out on the ice is always a good feeling. The Blues wasted no time getting their revenge either, scheduling their first game of the season to be played in Colorado. The Blues jumped out early and kept the pressure up this whole game.
Justin Faulk got the game going with a goal in the first period, which ended up being the only goal scored in the first. Blues took a 3-0 lead in the second with goals by David Perron and Brayden Schenn. Andre Burakovsky was able to get the Avalanche on the board and a 1-3 margin at the end of the second. The Blues and Avalanche traded goals in the third, but it was Ryan O’Reilly’s empty netter that sealed the deal for the Blues.
Bounce Back Game for the Coyotes
The Coyotes struggled in a weird 2021 season. Teams were forced to play the same opponents several times throughout the season and could only play in their division. With a small restructuring of divisions, the Coyotes landed in the West Division, which was filled with talent. The Coyotes finished the season in fifth, just on placement in the standings away from making it to the playoffs.
A heartbreaker of a game in Buffalo saw the Coyotes take a 1-0 lead into the second period on a goal by Andrew Ladd. With just a minute left in the second, Cody Eakin of the Sabres was able to tie it up. There would be no goals scored in the third period or the overtime. Buffalo was able to go two for three in the shootout to take the win.
Goalie Comparisons
The Blues will send Jordan Binnington to the crease this evening. Watching the game Saturday night, Binnington looked like a whole new person after a struggle of a year in 2021. Binnington was out of the crease, cutting down angles the whole game. If the Blues can get Stanley Cup Binnington, like they did Saturday night, they will be tough to beat.
Carter Hutton will more than likely be in goal for Arizona tonight. A brutal start to this season, Hutton gave up eight goals to the Columbus Blue Jackets. If Hutton can not be better than eight goals, it will be tough for the Coyotes to be competitive.
The Picks
The Blues are better on both paper and the product on ice so far this season. If Jordan Binnington can play like he did Saturday, the Coyotes will need to throw every puck they get on the net and hope for some miracle.
