Patrick Mahomes (+500)

The 2019 NFL MVP has been the favorite to win the award ever since. He was the favorite to begin the 2020 season, and he’s been the favorite to win the 2021 award since the minute Super Bowl LV ended in February.

A bet on Mahomes pays less than everyone else, but at +500 over at BetUS, it’s still good value for an elite quarterback talent who has Andy Reid calling his plays.

Aaron Rodgers (+1000)

The 2020 NFL MVP is the second-highest favorite to win again in 2021. The things working against Aaron Rodgers are that he turns 38 during the season, he had a most unusual offseason, and the Packers offensive line lost two of its best players.

Working for Aaron Rodgers is that he is an Aaron Rodgers with something to prove, he still has Davante Adams, and there’s no reason to think anything less than another NFC Championship Game is in his future.

Josh Allen (+1200)

Who is the real Josh Allen? Is he the player who struggled to fulfill expectations in his first two seasons? Or is he the guy who finished second in MVP voting in 2020? Probably closer to the latter, although his incredible third season will be hard to maintain. Although not so hard that he isn’t expected to be in the MVP hunt again in 2021.

The AFC East is better, which will challenge him. But he gets another season with Bills offensive coordinator Brian Daboll, who has clearly unlocked the superstar that made the team draft Allen seventh overall in 2018.

Russell Wilson (+1400)

Another player who had an interesting offseason is Russell Wilson. The Seahawks replaced his offensive coordinator, and then head coach Pete Carroll proudly proclaimed that he wanted to run the football more. Wilson was said to be unhappy with the investment in the offensive line, and reportedly he was seeking a trade.

Seattle traded for guard Gabe Jackson, and maybe it’s an upgrade. But the offensive line that gave up 47 sacks in 2020 is still mostly intact, and Wilson’s MVP candidacy doesn’t seem to have any more legs than it did a year ago.

Tom Brady (+1400)

In the 44th year of life, you should not be playing football, and you definitely shouldn’t be playing MVP-calibre football. But you aren’t Tom Brady. He is a quarterback like none other and is already the oldest player to ever win the MVP award, and that was four years ago.

The Buccaneers return everyone from their Super Bowl-winning team, which makes a case for a 44-year old MVP seem not that far-fetched.

Derrick Henry (+5000)

Derrick Henry is not next on this list. In fact, he’s 20th. But as the best running back in football and a guy with a legitimate chance at rushing for 2,000 yards in consecutive seasons, he’s worth talking about. Although the fact that a 2,000-yard back and the most important offensive player on a likely playoff team barely cracks the top 20 underscores what a quarterback’s league the NFL has become.

In the 14 years since 2007, only Adrian Peterson was an MVP-winning running back. In the 14 years before 2007, Emmitt Smith, Barry Sanders, Terrell Davis, Marshall Faulk, Shaun Alexander, and LaDainian Tomlinson all won the MVP.
