NFL Rookies Star in Training Camp – Hall of Fame game kicks off preseason.
The NFL Betting season starts on Thursday as the Hall of Fame game kicks off preseason play and that means that we are getting a ton of training camp news. One thing that I have noticed over the past few days is the emergence of rookies and their performance so far.
Knowing which rookies are dominating in training camp can give you a big edge in your fantasy drafts or in betting on teams early in the season. Let’s get into a few of the rookies that are impressing in camp. Keep Reading on NFL Rookies Star in Training Camp.
TOP #3 Sports Betting Sites to Bet on NFL
Elijah Moore and Michael Carter
The Jets starting QB Zach Wilson has been hit or miss to start training camp, making big plays but also looking like a rookie at times. The other offensive skill rookies on this roster have been very impressive, to say the least. Michael Carter is the clear RB1 on this team both in performance and where he lines up in team drills. This is something that we cannot usually say about running backs drafted on day 3. Heck, seeing them take second-team snaps would usually be a bit head-turning. Carter wasn’t even RB1 on his college team last season, but that seems likely to change here in his rookie season with the Jets.
Elijah Moore is the talk of Jets camp and you can find multiple beat writers on Twitter suggesting that Moore is the best overall player at Jets camp. This is while working with a bunch of inexperienced QBs and just a week into his true NFL career. While the Jets signed Corey Davis to be their #1 WR to start the season, I think Moore could be that guy sooner than later and I think that is best for both parties. We saw Davis struggle to begin his career until AJ Brown became an elite receiver opposite of him. This is when Davis really came to life. Moore should be rising up fantasy draft boards, but I’m not sure he will rise fast enough.
Trey Lance
Lance has been the talk of 49ers camp for a couple of reasons. First of all, unlike another rookie we will get to, his roadblock seems to be acting more like a turnstile. This, in addition to Lance making highlight plays and pushing the ball down the field, has 49ers beat writers and fans convinced that Lance will start sooner than later. The stories from the camp have been a bit misconstrued, so let’s talk about what to expect from Lance.
Shanahan has been adamant that Jimmy Garropolo will be the starter in week one and this has not changed, even though Jimmy G has struggled a bit at camp. I’ve seen words like tentative and indecisive used to describe his play. Lance has made more plays and has been more consistent, even if he is being a little aggressive. Now, Lance made waves a few days ago when he got a “first team snap.” This was one singular snap that he got behind the first-team offensive line to run a zone read, something that would be more prominent with Lance in the game. That being said, Shanahan suggested that he just wanted those linemen to get a rep with that blocking scheme. I tend to believe him, since having just one singular snap with the first team shouldn’t be a thing in a normal circumstance.
All eyes will be on the preseason for Lance, who will be looking to prove himself as just simply better than Jimmy Garropolo, which is what Coach Shanahan has suggested would need to happen for Lance to play.
Justin Fields is also showing out at Bears camp this week after starting off “like a rookie.” Fields were fine in his first week, but veteran Andy Dalton was clearly very poised and composed in the pocket, making things look easy relative to a first-year rookie. This week, there has been a different tune and Fields seems to be making more plays. Dalton isn’t struggling by any means and most beat writers have suggested that the Bears QB play is miles beyond what it was last year at this time with both Dalton and Fields. The trajectory here is what makes me think Fields is someone to keep an eye on. Coach Matt Nagy on Monday said that Fields has the playbook and playcalling down, signifying that Fields has been impressing him when it comes to the mental side of the game. This will be another battle to watch in the preseason, even if it’s not a “battle” according to the coaching staff.
