Understanding MLS Standings
MLS consists of 28 teams from across the US and Canada, and each of these teams is in either the western or eastern conferences. Therefore, they play only teams in their conference. As a result, each team plays 34 games, and the team with the most points occupies the top spot.
The top seven teams qualify for the playoff rounds from each conference, and the team sitting in number one would get direct entry into the conference semi-final. In addition to that, the team sitting number one would also qualify for the CONCACAF Champions League.
Each game offers a maximum of three points. So, the team that has the most goals after 90 minutes would get the most points. And if there is a tie, both teams will receive one point. Each point the teams collect is added to their existing points, and at the end of the day, the standings showcase the teams’ point tally.
Teams are also separated using goal difference, goals scored, goals conceded, and head-to-head. So, when two teams have the same points, these other metrics come into play to help rank the teams on the log, aiding the MLS odds.
