It is time to take a look at the countries with the Basketball Betting Odds to Win the Medals. And of course at the top, there is no surprise as to who the betting favorite is.

1) USA (-300)

All America does is win at basketball. The game has gone global, and it is especially apparent based on the team that just won the NBA Finals, plus the award winners and upcoming stars around the league. It all revolves around the Americans, but it is less true now than ever.

They lost their first game in pool play against France, though rebounded to dominate Iran. They were heavy favorites, and wound up winning 120-66. The game was played at 12:40 AM ET, so there were a lot of sleepy folks who could not quite stay up. It was pure class, though.

That type of showing is what they are capable of every time. They are supposed to win. It’s what everybody thinks they will do. And if they fail to do so, it will not be good. Led by the likes of Damian Lillard and Kevin Durant, they also have three guys who just played in the NBA Finals playing on their roster.

If they don’t win gold, a lot of questions will be asked. But for now, they will be attempting to get things done. Good luck to them.

2) Australia (+700)

The biggest competition for the USA will be met in the knockout stage, and not in group play. Australia is full of studs, guys who play hard and tremendously on both ends of the court. Players at all five positions can make big shots, while defending at a high level too.

There is not much weakness on the roster, with guys like Matisse Thybulle and Matthew Dellavedova leading the D. Joe Ingles is continuing to get better, while Aron Baynes, Nick Kay and Jock Landale are all looking like players who can dominate. All of them are capable of blocking shots on one end, and sinking triples on the other.

And of course, Patty Mills is the cream of the crop, playing like an Aussie Damian Lillard out there. He is one of the best Olympic players out there, and he is a tremendous leader. He has been a Spurs player for a long time, so dominating with international guys has been commonplace.

3) Spain (+1100)

Spain is not likely to win gold this summer, but anything can truly happen. The team has some veteran talent, not too much youth joins it though. Ricky Rubio is playing like a superstar, an obvious captain of the squad. 20 points and nine assists is not too shabby for the TWolves guard.

He’s joined by both Gasol brothers and Rudy Fernandez. It would be nice if Serge Ibaka could still play for them, but he cannot. Sergio Llull has also continued to dish the ball nicely. Rubio will need to be the best player on the court if they want any shot at an upset of an Australia or USA.

It’s nice to see the Gasols going strong, but they have not aged so gracefully.
