Nebraska (9/18)
This matchup would have been a game circled multiple times about twenty years ago featuring the former Big 12 rivals, but Nebraska has struggled to gain traction on the national stage since joining the Big Ten. Despite the lack of recent success, the Cornhuskers are on this list because they are the only non-conference opponent on the Oklahoma Sooners’ Betting schedule that plays in a power conference.
OU has the easiest strength of schedule in the Big 12 and ranks 51st in college football entering the season.
Fans in Lincoln are desperate for former Husker legend and current head coach, Scott Frost, to bring the team back to glory, but a road test on the road against the explosive Sooners won’t be what the doctor ordered.
Texas (10/9) Dallas, TX
The Red River Rivalry has ended in an Oklahoma win 5 of the last six seasons, but the games have been closer than the experts have predicted in most of those, including a four-overtime thriller in 2020. Steve Sarkisian takes over at Texas after a record-setting season as the offensive coordinator at Alabama.
He won’t have the same luxury of talent he worked with in Tuscaloosa, but he should have enough to put a fiery offense on the field by October. The story entering the season is Oklahoma’s improved defense, which has cost them on the big stage in years past, and the Longhorns will provide an early test.
Iowa State (11/20)
The Cyclones were one of Oklahoma’s losses in 2020 and return nearly every major contributor from a team that won the most games in the school’s last 20 seasons. Quarterback Brock Purdy and running back Breece Hall should give Spencer Rattler (OU quarterback) a run for Big 12 player of the year, and coach Matt Campbell has garnered NFL Odds attention in recent years while building a solid program in Ames.
These two teams could be destined to play twice in three weeks in a possible championship game rematch for a second straight season.
At Oklahoma State (11/27)
The lone road game listed in Oklahoma’s highlighted games, the Bedlam Series caps off the Sooners’ regular-season schedule. The Sooners have taken six straight from the Pokes, and with the exception of a one-point win in 2018, none of the matchups have been particularly close.

The Team
Lincoln Riley’s Sooner teams have been highlighted by the offensive side of the ball during his entire tenure, especially the quarterback position. In four seasons at the helm, Riley’s offenses have produced two Heisman Trophy winners (Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray) and a runner-up (Jalen Hurts).
The outlier was this past season as Spencer Rattler took some time to find his rhythm in his first season as a starter, but he enters 2021 as the favorite to win the Heisman (+400 per Bovada). A young but talent-laden wide receiver room gives Rattler plenty of options to spread the ball around the field.
On the defensive side of the ball, pass rusher Nik Bonitto hopes to provide the spark to elevate the Sooners into a more balanced football team. After an atrocious three-game stretch to start the conference schedule, including surrendering 45 points to rival Texas, Alex Grinch’s defense held opponents to 17 points per game in the final seven games.
That number would have finished top 10 in the country in 2020. Oklahoma returns all but two starters from the defense and should be able to build on that late-season success.
The Bet
Over 11 wins. It may not seem like much, but in sports betting, especially when looking at totals betting, the 0.5 can swing the decision of a bet. The Sooners return talent on both sides of the ball and face a fairly weak schedule, setting up nicely for another run at the College Football Playoffs.
OU should roll into the late-season matchup with Iowa State unscathed, and the result of the matchup with the Cyclones should decide if this bet is a win or, at worst, a push.

For all the reasons above leading the Sooners to hitting the over mark on their win total, the same exists for them to reach the CFP. If the defense can make the necessary strides, OU can end its winless streak in the playoffs and hoist the trophy in Indianapolis.
