Injuries Arise with Preseason Week 1 Upon Us

NFL training camp can be a fun time for NFL fans to scour Twitter and their favorite team’s message boards to learn a bit more about the team and how they are performing. Training camps are a great time for rookie hype to build or for a fanbase to panic about their offensive line issues or lack of depth in the secondary. Either way, there is always some kind of news at each camp every single day.

Bateman Goes Down

Rashod Bateman was said to be injured a few days ago and it sent a bit of panic into fantasy football drafters and Ravens’ fans alike. We now know the timetable for Bateman’s injury is “weeks, not months” for Bateman. If you watch Coach John Harbaugh when he gives that timetable, you can tell he is putting an emphasis on the plural aspect of “months,” indicating they probably do expect it to be more than one month but less than two.

We got confirmation later that Bateman did have surgery on his groin and is expected back “sometime in September.” With the injury history of Marqueese Brown and Sammy Watkins, it isn’t great that the Ravens will be without their first-round draft pick to start the season.

Colts Healthier than Expected

Carson Wentz was seen limping off of the field last week and then was diagnosed with a weird foot injury dating back years. This news sent the Colts into a spiral of rumors surrounding their QB situation entering week one with just Sam Ehlinger and Jacob Eason, two guys that are definitely not ready to be NFL QBs. Wentz was given a timetable of NFL 5 to 12 weeks, which is quite a wide range and could mean he’s out for almost half of the season. We then got reports a few days ago that Wentz was walking around Colts’ camp without a boot and without a limp. These reports were quickly followed up with reports that the Colts aren’t interested in trading for a QB like Nick Foles and that they expect Wentz to be back by NFL week 1.

A similar story occurred with All-Pro guard Quinten Nelson, who was diagnosed with the same foot injury as Wentz a day later. Nelson is also now expected by around NFL week 1. The fallout of this news is interesting, especially in fantasy football, where most of the Colts dropped significantly with this injury news and hasn’t risen back to pre-injury levels just yet. Look out for Colts sliding in your drafts and feel free to claim one or two at a value.

Rookie QB Update

With 5 first-round QBs in the 2021 NFL Draft, it’s a good idea to keep up with how the QBs look in training camp. Over an 8th of the teams in the NFL will likely turn to a rookie QB at some point and we want to know what to expect, we also want to know what to expect in the preseason games.

Fields and Lance Roll

These two have been the talk of their camps and Fields has been growing each day. I would say Lance has gotten positive reviews throughout but has struggled with some situational stuff in practice, which is expected from a player that played just 17 games in college in a very easy situation to thrive. Fields have also had good and bad days, but it seems like the good days are beginning to stack on top of each other and he leaves almost every single practice with what the beat reporters suggest are the best few plays of the day.

Lawrence, Wilson, Jones still have question marks

Lawrence has also gotten rave reviews for some of the plays he’s made but maybe has hit more bumps than Lance and Fields. Lawrence still hasn’t been named a starter, which may suggest that the Jags aren’t entirely content with his play day in and day out. Wilson has probably received the most negative reviews, as the interceptions pile up for him.

That being said, Wilson suggested in a press conference on Wednesday that his goal in practice is to learn the speed of the game ASAP and that means taking a lot of chances. Will he still be turnover-prone in the preseason? That is the question. Mac Jones has been eh, and this was expected if you dug into Jones the prospect. He will never take your breath away as the other 4 can with just one play. I think Jones’ playing time is very reliant on Cam Newton.
