The New York Yankees and Houston Astros will lock horns in Game 2 of the ALCS on Thursday.

The Astros did their thing against the Yankees in Game 1 of the ALDS, winning by a final score of 4-2. Houston had the rest advantage and looked ready to roll in their Game 1 victory.

The Yankees will need to win Game 2 to keep this series competitive. Going down 2-0 in a championship series is never a sound strategy. They will look to rebound in Game 2 against the Astros.

The first pitch is scheduled for 7:37 PM EST at Minute Maid Park in Houston, TX.

New York Yankees Overview:

The Yankees came up short on Wednesday. They had some chances on offense but ultimately fell short in the contest.

New York did a fairly good job on the mound. Surrendering just four runs to the Astros in Houston is a win all on its own. But, as we mentioned before, the offense did not hold up their end of the bargain.

  •  The New York Yankees are 75-93 against the run line this year.
  • The Yankees are 36-48 against the run line when playing on the road.
  • New York is 10-5 against the run line when playing as an underdog.
  • They are 9-5 against the run line as an away underdog this season.

The Yankees traveled to Houston late Tuesday night after beating the Guardians in the ALDS. Their lack of rest showed on Wednesday, as they fell short 4-2.

New York tallied just five total hits on offense. Giancarlo Stanton led the charge with two hits, while Anthony Rizzo and Harrison Bader both homered in the affair.

Jameson Taillon got the start and surrendered just one earned run over 4.1 innings pitched. However, he recorded no strikeouts and walked three in the outing. The bullpen followed New York by allowing three more runs which led to the defeat.

On the season, the Yankees are now 15th in batting average, fourth in OBP, fourth in slugging percentage, second in runs scored, and first in home runs. Pitching-wise, they are third in team ERA and third in WHIP.

The Yankees are known for their offensive prowess. They have no shortage of sluggers up and down their lineup. Harrison Bader, of all people, has already smashed four home runs in the playoffs.

But New York also believes in their pitching. The bullpen is formidable, albeit a bit thin at the moment, and starting pitching is very capable.

Luis Severino will get the start for the Yankees on Thursday in Game 2. New York needs a strong outing from their right-hander as they look to even the series.

The bullpen will be a talking point as well. It has been used quite a bit over the past couple of days, and Aaron Boone will benefit if a reliever or two can work multiple innings, barring a gem thrown by Severino.

Houston Astros Overview:

The Astros displayed their dominance on Wednesday. They did just enough offensively while limiting a powerful Yankees team.

Houston can put themselves in a tremendous position with a Game 2 victory. Heading to New York holding a 2-0 lead would certainly be ideal for the Astros.

  • The Houston Astros are 88-78 against the run line this year.
  • The Astros are 43-41 against the run line when playing at home.
  • Houston is 72-73 against the run line when playing as a favorite.
  • They are 41-40 against the run line as a home favorite this season.

The Astros wanted to establish their dominance early, and that is what they did. Justin Verlander went six innings of the 1-run ball while striking out 11.

It was a big performance for Verlander, who had previously struggled against the Mariners in the ALDS. The Astros will continue to lean on their veteran ace moving forward.

Offensively, Jeremy Pena recorded three hits with a home run. The shortstop gave Houston the lead in Game 3 against Seattle and once again played a big role in Game 1 vs. New York. Pena, despite being a rookie, clearly isn’t afraid of the big moment.

Yuli Gurriel and Chas McCormick both homered as well in the ball game.

This was an offense that ranked 12th in batting average, seventh in OBP, fifth in slugging percentage, eighth in runs scored, and fourth in home runs. On the pitching side of the equation, they are second in ERA and second in WHIP.

Framber Valdez draws the Game 2 start for Houston. The left-hander has been effective all season long and is a staple in the Astros’ rotation.
