Yankees Sweep Red Sox in Tuesday Doubleheader

The Yankees made a statement on Tuesday by sweeping the Red Sox at home in a doubleheader. Many bettors expected Boston to ride their weekend momentum into the Bronx, but they were silenced by Aaron Boone’s alleged savages.

The Yankees are 4.5 games out of first and tied for second place with the Boston Red Sox with the two wins. If the season ended today, there would be a Wild Card tiebreaker game at Fenway Park. However, Wednesday’s game will determine who takes over sole possession of the final Wild Card spot.

There are 40 games remaining for the Red Sox and 42 left for the Yankees. A lot will happen over the next month and a half, but we are in for a wild September finish in the American League.

Blown Opportunities for Boston in Game One

The Yankees dominated game one until the final inning. The score was 5-3 New York heading into the top of the seventh before New York reliever Jonathan Loaisiga got himself in trouble.

The bases were loaded in the seventh, but he still found a way to finish his courageous two-inning save. The pitcher made Travis Shaw fly out before striking out Kike Hernandez and Hunter Renfroe to end the game.

New York has now won four straight games, and Loaisiga has been a prime reason for this success. The young reliever and fellow bullpen pitcher have been called on to close games with Aroldis Chapman on the injured list.

After game one Boone, praised his pitcher, saying, “He didn’t flinch. You could just see his confidence out there, like, ‘I got this.’ He was able to execute and wiggle out of it.”

Game Two Shutout

If Red Sox Nation thought game one was bad, the second contest of the series was even worse. Boston was shut out by a 2-0 margin in a matchup where they should have prevailed.

In a seven-inning game, Boston left nine runners on base. New York left seven, but they racked up eight hits compared to the Red Sox with five. When the offense has not delivered in 2021, Boston has been an average club.

The Red Sox are built around a strong offense with a shaky pitching staff. Yet, game two was not on the pitchers. Nathan Eovaldi started and did not look good but battled throughout the night, giving up two runs in five innings.

Martin Perez and Hirokazu Sawamura pitched one inning of scoreless relief, but the offense did not deliver. The Yankees are rolling, and the train could be hard to stop.

Looking Ahead

On Wednesday evening, the Red Sox and Yankees will compete for sole possession of second place in the American League East. Nick Pivetta will throw for Boston against Andrew Heaney of New York.

Heaney was a late addition at the deadline for the Yankees. There is nothing special about Heaney, but he adds depth to an average rotation. Pivetta has been one of Boston’s best wings, which is not saying much when looking at the staff.

He is 9-5 on the season with a 4.20 ERA over 124.1 innings. Pivetta has won games because of an electrifying offense, but this unit has been inconsistent since the end of July. This is one reason that the Red Sox are underdogs heading into tomorrow’s contest, according to Bovada.

The Yankees are favored on the run line with a money line of -126. The Red Sox are +108 to win, and the over/under has been set at ten runs. The Red Sox are still slight favorites to win the division over New York at +440 compared to the Bronx Bombers at +460.
