Subway Series Kicks Off Friday

An important weekend for New Yorkers and New York sports fans alike gets started on Friday night when the New York Mets host the New York Yankees. With both teams fighting for their playoff lives at the moment, it’s an important series for both teams. But with the Subway Series starting on the eve of the 20th anniversary of 9/11, this meeting is also important for other reasons.

According to BetOnline, the betting odds for this game are tight, with the Mets having a moneyline of -115 and the Yankees having a betting line of -115. There could also be a sportsbook taking wagers on the over/under of 8.5 runs.

Playoffs?

These days, the Mets can’t help but take two steps forward and one step back in their playoff push. Not long after winning seven in a row, the Mets have dropped four of their last six games, all of which were played against the Marlins and Nationals. They are now a game under .500 and five games behind the Braves in the NL East race.

Meanwhile, the Yankees head into the Subway Series on the heels of a six-game losing streak. After a strong month of August to get back in the playoff picture, things have come apart for the Yankees in September. The only silver lining is that the Yankees are holding onto the slimmest of leads for the second Wild Card spot in the American League.

Call Me Monty

Jordan Montgomery will get the start on Friday, giving the Yankees hope that they can snap their losing streak. The lefty is 5-5 with a 3.47 ERA in his 25 starts this season, becoming one of the few stable parts of the starting rotation. He also posted a 2.18 ERA during the month of August and has allowed one run or less in six of his last seven starts.

Meanwhile, the Mets have seen their bats fall silent again after a nice run in late August and early September. They have scored just three total runs in back-to-back losses and have scored three runs or less in three of their last four games. However, the Mets had been scorching hot right before their last two games, so perhaps they can find a way to get back on track quickly.

Rookie Roller Coaster

Rookie Tylor Megill will make his Subway Series debut on Friday. He’s been a pleasant surprise for the starting rotation this year, going 2-4 with a 4.20 ERA over 14 starts. However, there have been multiple bumps in the road lately, with Megill allowing four runs or more in four of his last seven starts.

Of course, Megill could catch a break by facing a lineup that’s gone cold in September. The Yankees are averaging just three runs per game during their six-game losing streak and have scored more than four runs in a game in September. The four runs the Yankees scored in Thursday’s loss was actually a step in the right direction, although several important players are still in a slump.

Break the Streak

There should be a playoff atmosphere at Citi Field on Friday with fans of both teams filling the stands and both teams desperate to win every game they possibly can. With Megill’s inconsistency lately and the Mets going cold in recent days, the Yankees are more likely to find some offense. Bet on the Yankees to win the series opener on Friday night.

At the same time, neither team has been able to get going offensively lately. Either team would consider itself lucky to score more than three or four runs in this game. That means the under on 8.5 runs will carry plenty of value in this matchup as well.
