Evenly Matched Series
The two teams played against each other seven times this season. The Dodgers were able to win four of the seven games. Adam Wainwright is 1-0 against the Dodgers this season, while Max Scherzer is also 1-0 against the Cardinals.
Every win the Cardinals had against the Dodgers this season was by a single run. The Dodgers, however, were able to win all four of their games by multiple runs.
Can the Bats Stay Hot?
The Cardinals have been on a rampage in September. Starting September 8th, the Cardinals only lost two games in the entire month while going on a historic 17 game winning streak. A lot of that can be credited to the offense.
The two guys that have been carrying this team are Paul Goldschmidt and Tyler O’Neil. In his third year with the Cardinals, Goldschmidt is having his best season since joining the club, hitting .295 with 31 home runs and 100 RBI’s. O’Neil is right behind him, hitting .286 with 34 home runs and 80 RBI’s. When these two guys get going, it seems the rest of the team is quick to jump on board as well.
The Turner Tandem
Trea Turner and Justin Turner have been great this year for the Dodgers. Newly acquired at the trade deadline, Trea Turner has not slowed down since joining the club. He is hitting .328 with 28 home runs and 77 RBI’s. Justin Turner is also having a great season, hitting .278 with 27 home runs and 87 RBI’s.
The Dodgers will more than likely be without their first baseman, Max Muncy. An arm injury to his left arm is causing him to be unable to swing the bat at all. It will be very interesting who the Dodgers use to try and fill that void.
Scherzer vs. Wainwright
In a state of baseball where the young power arms have slowly taken over, this game will send two of the game’s best veteran arms to the mound for both sides. Scherzer has been electric all year, posting a 15-4 record with a 2.46 ERA. The Dodgers have not lost a game that Scherzer has started since July 29th.
Adam Wainwright, fresh off a year extension for 2022, has revitalized this ball club single-handedly. With injuries to two of their most prominent young arms, Dakota Hudson and Jack Flaherty, Wainwright has carried the team. He has posted a 17-7 record with a 3.05 ERA. The Cardinals have won 12 of his last 13 starts.
Anything Can Happen
In a one-game playoff, it just seems like every team has a chance. The Dodgers have been dominant at home, with a 58-23 record.
Although the Cardinals seem to be at their best with Wainwright on the mound, there’s a good chance it will not be enough tonight. When making your MLB picks, take the Dodgers -220.
