Oklahoma State Cowboys Win Total: o/u 8 wins

This write-up starts with a moment of silence across College Football for Mike Gundy’s mullet.

The Cowboys coach cut his infamous locks this offseason at the request of his wife. The mullet has been a part of the Cowboys football program during Gundy’s tenure, as have winning seasons. Gundy’s first year as Oklahoma State’s head coach came with a 4-7 record, but the head coach has led his team to 15 straight winning seasons since. 11 times in those 15 seasons, Gundy has led the Pokes to eight or more wins.

The Schedule

At Texas (10/16): The Longhorns have historically dominated this matchup and have won two straight against OSU. Before that though, Gundy and his team had begun to shift the tides by taking four straight against Texas. Steve Sarkisian has taken over in Texas after putting up historic offensive numbers at Alabama as offensive coordinator and should be able to light up scoreboards in the offensively adept Big 12. Oklahoma State has the benefit of coming off a bye week, while Texas comes back from Dallas against their rivals Oklahoma. Advantage Cowboys.

At Iowa State (10/23): Back-to-back road games for Oklahoma State against preseason nationally-ranked opponents. The Cyclones will be on a mission to make the College Football Playoff this year, coming in with their highest ever ranking in school history at 7th. Quarterback Brock Purdy and running back Breece Hall should both contend for Big 12 player of the year and create a formidable offense for coach Matt Campbell. The Cowboys handed Iowa State one of their three losses a season ago and hoped to repeat that success on the road this season.

Oklahoma (11/27): Bedlam. Not only the name of the rivalry series between the two but an accurate description of how the games typically play out. This is one of the biggest and most competitive rivalries in college football, and the Cowboys will be looking to play spoiler to the nationally preseason ranked number two Sooners. Oklahoma is the favorite to win the Big 12 at -180 per Bovada and is led by quarterback Spencer Rattler, the favorite to win the Heisman Trophy at +500 per BetUS. BetOnline has this game opening with the Sooners as an 11.5-point favorite on the road.

The Team

Mike Gundy’s teams have been known for their work on the offensive side of the ball. Quarterback Spencer Sanders is back for another season and should be one of the top pass throwers in the conference. Running back Chuba Hubbard and wide receiver Tylan Wallace leave big shoes to fill on the offense from a playmaking standpoint, and offensive tackle Teven Jenkins has moved on to the NFL as well.

The opportunity will be there for young guys to step up and fall in a long line of quality playmakers in Stillwater. On the defensive side of the ball, the Cowboys return most of the defensive starters on a team that finished fourth in the conference in points allowed per game.

The Bet

Over 8 wins

If this betting line were listed at 8.5 wins, it might swing the bet to the under, but the even number makes the over worth the play. Sanders is entering his third year as the starter and should help young playmakers contribute early on offense, and the defense should be one of the better groups in the conference. Gundy’s history of winning seasons adds to the confidence on this bet, and the Cowboys should finish the season around 8-4 or 9-3.

Other Bets

Oklahoma State Big 12 Champions: BetUS has the Cowboys at +1000 to win the Big 12. Iowa State and Oklahoma look to be on a collision course for a rematch in the Big 12 title game, but the Cowboys could play spoiler to either of those teams and find themselves in Dallas. Sanders will need to show that he’s got full command of the offense for OSU to get there, but he’s got the experience and tools to make it possible.
