Coastal Carolina Chanticleers Win Total: o/u 10

The Chanticleers may have been the most entertaining team and story in college football in 2020. Reigning AP coach of the year Jamey Chadwell’s team finished the season with an 11-1 record, losing in their bowl game but reached as high as 9th in the national rankings. Not bad for a school that’s entering only its fifth season as an FBS program.

The Schedule

Kansas (9/10)

The finale of a “two for one” series with Kansas has the Jayhawks venturing to Myrtle Beach to play on the teal turf of the Chants. Coastal Carolina is coming off back-to-back seasons with wins in Lawrence and looks to make a clean sweep of the Jayhawks in their first game hosting a power five school. Kansas welcomes in new head coach Lance Leipold to a program that hasn’t won more than three games since 2009. BetUS currently has the Jayhawks win total set at over/under 1 win.

At Arkansas State (10/7)

You would be hard-pressed to find many Sun Belt Conference games that will challenge the Chanticleers, so this may just be throwing a dart here. The Red Wolves weren’t necessarily competitive with Coastal Carolina a season ago, but few teams in the conference were. This game takes place on a Thursday night in Jonesboro on a short week, which could possibly create some challenges for the visiting Chanticleers.

Butch Jones takes over as coach of the Red Wolves after a stint at Alabama in Nick Saban’s “coaching rehabilitation center,” which has provided success for others.

At Appalachian State (10/20)

This will likely be the most competitive game on Coastal Carolina’s regular-season schedule. Appalachian State became the first FCS school to defeat an FBS program in 2007 with a win over Michigan in Ann Arbor. Since then, the Mountaineers have joined the Sun Belt and FBS level (2014) and have strung together seven straight winning seasons and a 6-0 bowl record. The Chanticleers get a bye week between Arkansas State and Appalachian State, but another midweek road game could create some chaos.

The Team

Coastal Carolina took the nation by storm last year, and many times when a small conference school has success, the big-name schools come to try and poach the reasons for that success. The Chanticleers avoided that problem and are poised to build on the momentum they found in 2020. Head coach Jamey Chadwell is back, as are 19 of the team’s 22 starters from a season ago.

Quarterback Grayson McCall returns as the reigning Sun Belt Player of the Year on offense, and his dual-style attack is set to give opposing defenses headaches again this season. Running back CJ Marable declared for the NFL draft, but the entire Chanticleers’ offensive line returns as well as three additional starters outside of McCall. On defense, the team loses the Sun Belt Defensive Player of the Year, Tarron Jackson, but returns every other starter from a season ago.

The Bet

Over 10 wins.

There doesn’t appear to be a game on the Chanticleers’ schedule that Coastal Carolina won’t open as betting line favorites. The biggest threat to their repeat as conference champions comes from the Louisiana Ragin’ Cajuns, who wouldn’t appear on the schedule until a possible conference championship game. This gives the team a great chance to post a second straight undefeated regular season and capture the attention of fans across the country. Bovada, BetUS, and BetOnline all feel the same on this as the odds favor the over at -130.

Other Bets

Coastal Carolina to make the College Football Playoff

Bovada has the line on Coastal’s chances at +5000. The Chanticleers would have to run the table in the regular season and conference championship in an impressive way and hope for chaos everywhere else in college football. This team would have to blow the “eye test” out of the water in order to get the committee to consider them for a playoff berth with the lack of marquee data points available, given their schedule.

Grayson McCall Heisman Trophy Winner

If there were a way to parlay these two bets, that would be the ultimate chance at a longshot home run. For CCU to make the playoffs, the stats and winning margins would need to be astronomical. Grayson McCall would stand to benefit from that, as the redshirt sophomore can find the end zone with his arm and his legs. BetOnline has his odds at +6600, and it would take the craziest of years in college football for him to hoist the Heisman Trophy at year’s end.
